The Execution and Death of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette

The very largely unliked Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette where both executed in 1793.

Leading up to the executions, Louis inherited the throne of his grandfather, King Louis XV. He inherited the throne with lots of debt and financial problems. In an attempt to save the country from their financial issues, Louis assembled the estates general. After Louis told the estates that they couldn't meet simultaneously the third estate of the common people got angry, and declared themselves a national assembly, beginning the French Revolution. Later on, on July 14 1789, Parisians mobbed the Bastille, as a form of revolt.

In October 1789 the couple and their family were forced to move to Paris, and when attempting to flee a year and a half later in 1791, they were caught and sent back to Paris. Louis then was forced to accept a new constitutional monarchy declared by the National Assembly. In August of 1791 both Louis and Marie were arrested and incarcerated.

Shortly afterwards, in January 1793 Louis was convicted and found guilty. And on January 21 1793 Louis XVI was executed. Nine months later in October, Marie Antoinette was also convicted guilty of treason and was given a death sentence. On October 16 1793 Marie Antoinette followed her husband and was executed via guillotine.
